For the most part, when an individual is stung by a bee, it doesn’t have a life threatening reaction for that person. They might swell up a little where stung, but for the most part, it doesn’t do much because the poison in the stinger isn’t strong enough. However, for some people, when they are stung by a bee, it causes a tremendous reaction in their body that – if not treated properly – can result in death. Therefore, these are the treatments for a bee sting if things are very bad and you are exceptionally allergic.

1. Immediately remove oneself from the situation. Bees release a chemical that attracts more bees. Get stung once and you might get stung again. Therefore, getting away from the situation is the first defense against future stings.

2. Remove the stinger. Don’t rub it off; pull it out. The longer it remains, the more damage it can do and the more venom it can release into the body. It’s like an IV drip of poison.

3. If you are allergic, immediately use your EpiPen that you are carrying on you. If it is someone else that is allergic, ask if they have an EpiPen and help them administer it.

4. Call 911 if they begin to develop signs of anaphylaxis. These symptoms are itching, hives, redness and shortness of breath.

5. If stung in the mouth or stung more than ten times, immediately take the person to the emergency room. A sting in the mouth can cause swelling that can have an impact on one’s breathing. If stung more than ten times, there is an increased amount of toxin inside the person that can do damage.

6. Give Advil to help the pain if the person is not allergic. The pain will disappear after a little while.

A bee sting is an unfortunate situation because they are annoying and painful. However, if being stung by a bee sends you into anaphylaxis, it is important to always carry an EpiPen on you just in case you’re stung. Sometimes, a bee appears without you realizing it, lands on you and stings. By being prepared and having the EpiPen on you, the chemicals in the pen can react with the venom and ensure that nothing catastrophic happens. Taking your time and not doing the proper protocol (see above) could result in the death of the person who was stung. It is better to be safe than sorry.
